MY BOARD GAME BASED ON THE ISLE OF MAN RACES

FIRST VERSION SPONSORED BY GEOFF DUKES "MANX LINE" IN 1978
(ON DISPLAY IN THE MANX HERITAGE MUSEUM IN DOUGLAS)

I was recovering from serious spinal injuries which had required a back operation.

The company for whom I worked kept me on the books and gave me work to do at home.

I was required to carry out a marketing exercise so I found a method of working flat on my back in a plaster support jacket with a drawing board mounted on four short coffee table legs suspended over myself with the working area downwards. I was able to attach paper to the underside using micropore so I could write and draw in bed.

I combined my project with my love and knowledge of the TT and came up with a board game which simulated the races.

I had almost completed the game and was entering the field of sales and promotion when a friend visited me from the Isle of Man. He asked what I was doing to keep out of mischief amd I showed him the game. He sat for a while with pursed lips and then said "I have an idea, I will be back to you fairly soon"

He returned to the Isle of man and in a very short time, When I was fitter, I was taken up by car, still in a plaster jacket to a Heathrow Hotel to meet representatives of the IOM Tourist Board including Jack Nivison to whom I demonstrated the game.

Wheels were put into motion and shortly I was given financial support to produce an initial batch.

The game was initially sponsored by Geoff Dukes "Manx Line" and the Isle of Man Tourist Board. My Haulage Contractor uncle, George Bambrough, bought some of my first batch to get things underway and then Duke Marketing, Motorcycling Weekly (no longer with us) and the TT Supporters Club.
Motor Cycle News supported one major run as did Ferodo and Bikeright Motorcycle Training. The late great Mike Hailwood gave me valuable advice and help as did TT riders Doug Randall, Nick Jefferies, Denis Parkinson and Mick Grant, plus journalist Mick Woollett and Peter Kneale....

The game still sells world wide and has been updated as the lap record went higher and higher
(NB- The game is copyrighted)
