SHOWING PEOPLE AROUND

After all the years I have been attending I have picked up quite a lot of useful information. Therefore I am pleased to be able to impart my knowledge to anyone either willing to listen or to someone who wants to know about the TT and the Isle of Man.

For a number of years, when the late Peter Kneale was very busy in the Press Office I would end up taking charge when people clamoured for directions and information. I had my corner in the office near the pigeon holes and through this I became known to many media representatives, some of whom were regulars and some were first timers...

Other times I would meet up with a rider who would be willing to go with me for a car lap and they would tell me of their individual braking points and racing lines which from person to person had enough variation to show me who was out to get results and others who really were taking part to go faster than they would normally. I made notes once I got back to the hotel then began using a tape recorder then a video camera which I mounted on the roof rack and who-ever was with me would commentate via the microphone situated in the car, the cable coming in through the passenger window..

I have had so many famous riders do the lap with me from Steve Hislop to Liz Skinner, From Kate Parkinson to Doug Randall and from Denis Parkinson to Dennis Ireland....Each had their own way of riding the course.

I was able to use this knowledge to chat with some of the press from all over the world, Les Roberts from New Zealand, Leslie Nichol, Norrie Whyte were some who were impressed by my knowledge, especially since I didn't ride a motorcycle...

Finally, I best enjoy taking someone round who is making a first visit. I try to relate all that I know while doing a lap -- adhering to speed limits through the towns and villages -- but letting the car do a bit more over the mountain..When we arrive at the finish line I am aware that the person is impressed with the TT Course and I see these people in subsequent years as good friends.
