HUNTLYS CUT

REGAL HOTEL

FAIRHAVEN

My Dad always talked about "The Cut" and when I eventually stepped out on a cold dark morning to go to my first practice in 1947, I, at last found out what it was all about.

My Dad and his group of lads who went with him to the TT in the 1930s, had to walk along the prom to Broadway to get up to the TT Paddock. Early or late, this could take quite a while, so other ways to get from the prom were researched.

It was when they were returning from the Start and Finish that they came down Marathon Drive, joining on to Victoria Road, and then saw a gap in the wall opposite Victory Crescent .

They all decided to follow the little path and ended up on Empress Drive from which area it was an easy walk down past SR Keigs and the Castle Mona and on to the prom and then left to the Regal. It cut a lot off the walking time so it was nicknamed the "CUT", though in the north of England it can mean a gap.

When I arrived in 1947, the cut was a rough path and few other people had found it. Over the years it has been concreted over and is now a recognised access passageway.

So when I stayed in the Fairhaven, it was a nice short walk to the grandstand !

YOU CAN SEE THE CUT EVEN NOW, MARKED WITH THE ARROWS
